Koalas live in Austalia.

When they are born they are the same size as a jellybean.

They climb up the mother's belly and grow in her pouch.Koalas sleep a lot! They are only awake for 4 hours a day.

During that time they eat and eat and eat.

We made these Koalas using our fingerprints.

Mrs. Domingos will read Twas the Night Before Christmas and musician Mike Soloway will accompany us in singing our favorite holiday songs. Creepy Eyeballs

Illuminated, creepy eyeballs filled the children's room tonight. Make one at home with a battery powered tealight, a ping pong ball and permanent markers. Kids at the library went wild with pom poms glitter, foam shapes and googly eyes as well.

Congratulations to all! The scarecrows were fantastic this year and the weather couldn't have been better. I hesitate to announce winners because each and every one of the entries were so very creative making everyone a winner in my book. That being said ,it was a contest, and judges Kathy and Joe Despres had a very difficult decision to make. Ultimately they settled on the following :

Junior League of Long Island Sponsors Littlest Volunteers Contest

Opportunity for Long Island Children to Win $100 to Help Others

Roslyn, N.Y. – September 23, 2011, The Junior League of Long Island (www.jlli.org), a nonprofit organization of women volunteers, is sponsoring a contest for Long Island children interested in helping their community.

The writing contest is open to any child in Nassau or Suffolk County between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. One winner will be selected from each county. Participants are asked to hand write their idea for a community project in no more than 10 sentences. The entry must include who/what you would like to help in your community and how you would use $100 to do that. Ideas might include a volunteer project, a donation to a charity, a fundraising sale or neighborhood drive for food, toys, books etc. Adults can be included in the community project, but the child should design and plan it on his or her own.

Each entry must include the child’s name,contact information and school. Entries should be mailed by Monday, October 24, 2011 to:

An unexpected surprise at the Ducks Game. Read all about it!

Hi Deb! How are you? Just wanted to give you all an

FYI regarding the LI Ducks game on July 9th.... The

four of us were picked randomly to have our seats upgraded to the Dave

and Buster Best Seats in the House promotion. We were

moved to behind home plate and sat on a comfy leather couch for the whole

game. We received free t-shirts, photo-op with Quacker Jack,

and we were put on the jumbo screen. Everyone that was in our original

row (library tix) received a $5 Dave & Buster game

pass. Attached is a picture of Patrick, Grace, & Jack

enjoying the couch upgrade. The Ducks won

and the fireworks show was great....we sat in our original library seats

to enjoy the fireworks and the view was fantastic

For best results combine and shake.

The library celebrated the 24th Annual Children's Bake-off today, an almost balmy November day. As in the past, children in grades K-8 competed for trophies, prizes an bragging rights in 4 categories, cakes, pies, cookies and no-bake confections. We also had a Brownie Throw-Down competition for teens grades 9-12. Thank you to the parents who shared their kitchens, the judges, bakers and to all of those who helped us clean up. It was an awesome day!

202 People at Green Meadow Farms Show

The rain held out for our last big program of the season. Jason Reilly from Green Meadow Farms is always a welcome visitor to Brookhaven Free Library and this year was no exception!

Thank you parents for visiting the library and enduring all of our reminder calls this summer. Your children's staff enjoyed spending time with your children and we hope you'll let us know what you thought of our program.

Wow- We had our First Wii Bowling Tournament Today

The Library recently purchased a Wii game system and 19 kids visited today to test it out on our giant movie screen.

Families didn't want to leave this fun outdoor program yesterday. Children visited the Tattoo Parlor, decorated a Pirates Ship, played with "Foamerators", participated in a Cannon Ball Toss and so much more.

The pools were inflated and filled this morning in anticipation of the arrival of bathers and party goers all under the age of 5. 126 people joined the cool water play on the library lawn with tropical tunes to set the mood and frozen strawberry lemonade to quench our thirst. Our guests agree this was a great way to spend an afternoon.

After building a boat out of milk cartons and duct tape, kids tested their ship's sea worthiness by squirting them with water pistols. It was a warm day so squirting each other felt especially good. Kids went home with their boats, a water pistol and some fun ideas for at home play.

Hello- Newsletters are coming soon so parents can begin to schedule their children's summer activities. In today's tough economy the Brookhaven Free Library's Children's Department works tirelessly to create programs that will serve the most people in our community and that will have strong child appeal, high edutainment and entertainment value.

We continue to provide all of our children's programs without cost to parents. Not charging material fees, enables all families the chance to partake in classes. We urge you to sign-up for programs and to ATTEND. Each time you miss a program it costs the library money and denies another child in the community the opportunity to experience the class.

A valid Brookhaven Free Library card will be requested at the time of registration this year. Please update your card today and use our easy registration worksheet when planning the programs you wish to register for. The worksheets will be available in house and online soon.

Summer Registration begins Monday, June 21 during library hours.

Spiders, hissing cockroaches, snakes, alligators, toads and frogs were all accounted for yesterday after their afternoon visit to the library. Kids learned where the various animals were from, how they adapt to their environment and many other interesting facts. A good time was had by all.

Hi everyone,
Our first full color cookbook is here for you to enjoy and share with friends and family. Please remember that the recipes were submitted by children and have not been tested by our staff. The library will not earn any revenue from the sale of this cookbook. It has been created to satisfy the requests of many patrons as a remembrance of the day. The cost of the book is 25.95 and can be purchased through Lulu publishing.

Children had their pictures taken today at Let's Sing and then again at Rudolph's Mail Room on Sunday afternoon. We'll be happy to take your picture too, just drop by the library! And don't forget if you take out 10 children's book we'll give you a free take home craft.

BFL Rings in the Holiday Season in Great Voice

Patricia Feiler, lead more than 100 people in song Friday night at the Library's Annual Holiday Sing. Kids played sleigh bells and joined their family and friends for Christmas cookies and cider after the caroling. Thank you to Frank Stehlik who contributed a delicious tray of homemade cookies for the crowd to enjoy.

Wow...What a Bake-Off!

Our chef hats are off to all of the bakers at this years Children's Bake-Off. The delicious and beautifully decorated entries were judged by 8 local supporters of library programs, trophies were awarded and spectators and supportive family members sampled the delectable entries. The children's department will be compiling a book of recipes that will be available for purchase soon. We will post details on how you can obtain a copy when they become available. Congratulations to all and thank you judges!

We are Flippin out for Pancakes

After reading Like Butter on Pancakes and Mr Wolf's Pancakes, kids sat down to a delicious plate of buttery pancakes with warm syrup. Children learned to both cut their pancakes and clear their own place setting.

These apples don't fall from trees, they are glued on!
